Incentives for Solo Cruisers

Posted: February 22, 2022

The cruise industry is taking a different approach to the way we cruise. They are putting more focus on the connection between singles and cruise travel.

Here are some tips and benefits for cruisers interested in going solo on a cruise.

Enticements

Some cruise lines are making a concerted effort to attract more single guests, and are waiving the usual single supplement fee or are offering studio staterooms.

Avalon Waterways is one company that is offering a portion of staterooms without a single supplement on every departure in Europe in 2017.

Tauck also has waived the fee on all Category 1 staterooms on their European riverboats for every departure this year.

AmaWaterways is offering nine river cruise itineraries where the single fee is waived if booked by March 31, 2017.

AIDA Cruises offers a stateroom for guests who wish to have stateroom alone; a select number of which are offered on every cruise.

And finally, Uniworld is waiving or dropping their single supplement fee on 30 of its most popular itineraries in 2017.

Cruise Cupids

When it comes to finding the best cruise for solo cruisers, travel agents can play cupid and help you find the best cruise line.

There are travel agents who specifically targets cruisers that are looking for another person to share a stateroom with them.

You never know, it might be like “Married at First Sight”.  Okay maybe not quite that far..

Onboard Activities for Singles

Many cruise lines offer events and excursions created with guests travelling alone in mind.

Offering singles itineraries with shore excursions and onboard programs conducted in warm intimate groups to encourage connections among guests.

They also offer happy hours each evening, which is a textbook situation for singles to mingle.

Studio Staterooms

Some cruise lines offer studio rooms designed specifically for solo cruisers.

Norwegian Cruise Line was the first to add staterooms and common areas to their cruise lines for the single cruiser, and they are offered on select cruise ships.

Royal Caribbean International is offering studio staterooms as well on some newfangled or refreshed ships, as well as those with balconies or virtual balconies.

Cunard has long had a tradition of offering single staterooms, and over the years each ship has received them: Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth, and most recently Queen Mary 2 during her noteworthy remastering.

Making Acquaintances

Before you set sail for the cruise of a lifetime, join discussions in cruise forums specifically for solo cruisers for a chance to meet others who will be onboard your cruise. Cruise Critic is the perfect website to find such forums.

Cruise Neighbours

Love thy Cruise Neighbour

Posted: January 16, 2023

In an ideal world, your cruise ship cabin neighbours are generally respectful, obliging and quiet.

However, some unlucky cruisers encounter bad neighbours, being loud, breaking the rules and being outright rude.

The Noisy Neighbour

Loud and obnoxious neighbours can make you frantic and hostile

The people in the cabin next to you can set the tone for your whole cruise.  Quiet uninterruptive neighbours will aide in your peaceful cruise experience, while loud and obnoxious neighbours can make you frantic and hostile.  While cruise ship walls aren’t paper thin, they are definitely thin enough for sound to travel through.

Stumbling down the corridor at 3am and then when in their cabin, you hear “Oh My God Yes, Yes, Yes!” and your neighbours are not praying.  Or a heated argument is taking place.  If you do hear your neighbours fighting, my advice, take action immediately as you can never predict how quickly it could escalate, or if violence will ensue.

A simple word to your cabin steward may help and if that doesn’t cut it, request to be moved to another cabin.

Earplugs may help or downloading a white noise app on your device to drown out the sound.

Left Overs in the Hall

Call housekeeping to clear away the tray, then ask your steward if he or she can kindly let your neighbours know the hall isn't the place for their tray

Some hotels ask you to leave your room service tray outside your door in the hall.

This act is actually frowned upon on cruise ships.  It’s not a good look having old food near your cabin and it may be a bit on the nose.  Always give your neighbour the benefit of the doubt as first timers may not realise the etiquette.

Call housekeeping or room service to clear away the tray, then ask your steward if he or she can kindly let your neighbours know the hall isn’t the place for their tray.

 Smoking on the Balcony

For cruisers that do know the rules and yet will still disregard them, call security who will resolve the issue

Smoking is prohibited in cabins and balconies on almost all cruise ships.  Apart from the smell of cigarette or cigar smoke, it is a fire hazard.

Unfortunately, you may encounter some neighbours who will go against policy and light up on their balcony, creating a nuisance and putting themselves and their fellow travellers at risk.  Often, one warning is all they need as they may be novice cruisers who are not aware of the rules regarding smoking.

For cruisers that do know the rules and yet will still disregard them, call security who will resolve the issue.

Until then, you may have to reschedule your balcony time to avoid the smokers.

If you’re unlucky enough to encounter a bad neighbour on your cruise, don’t confront them yourself.  Let’s avoid an awkward or intense situation by taking the appropriate action.

That way, you and your testy neighbour can continue to enjoy the cruise and relax in the knowledge that in the end, we’re all only human and sometimes just need a bit of guidance.

This Mystery Cruise Takes Cruisers To Six Undisclosed Destinations

Posted: October 30, 2022

Do you like surprises? And do you love travelling?

If you like the unexpected you might be fascinated in taking the gigantic leap of faith that is a cruise to six different localities.

Only rhree pieces of the puzzle are revealed: The price, the departure and, the return dates, the Secret Sailaway Cruise, from the Bolsover Cruise Club.

This rare cruise will keep passengers conjecturing the particulars of their cruise itinerary, which will be concealed in the form of 10 riddles.

Can you guess the destination from this riddle for the Secret Sailaway cruise? Credit: Bolsover Cruise Club

What we can tell you thought is passengers will be embarking on a 16-night luxury cruise cruising into the unknown, with no awareness of their destinations, ports or call, and connecting flights.

The mystery cruise is priced at $15,000 per person and will depart on March 18, 2017.

Bolsover Cruise Club says the itinerary will include “five-star stop-overs in some of the world’s best hotels.”

Passengers will receive details when they arrive at their departure harbor, which has not yet been revealed.

Each “carefully crafted” riddle will provide recognised details about each destination, as well as some of the less obvious.

Cruisers can anticipate to initiate their journey from the “highest point” of a “highly sacred and holy” island, and sail to a place “where the rarest find is pink sand”, before come across “natives naughty and nice” and cruising inward bound to “the land of modern dinosaurs” and “the city of heroes”.

But if you are a “spoilt sport” you will have the choice of having the full itinerary shown to you once you have booked a cabin.

“Travelling is not as adventurous as it once was. You can find out everything about where you’re going before you’re within a thousand miles,” Michael Wilson, the managing director of Bolsover Cruise Club.

“This is our attempt to bring back some of the adventure, albeit with all the comforts of a luxury cruise,” he added.
