Milestone: Carnival Cruise Line Welcomes Half a Million Guests

Posted: June 8, 2022

Carnival Cruise Line has achieved an extraordinary milestone, welcoming half a million passengers onto its Australia-based ships Carnival Spirit and Carnival Legend since its debut Down Under in 2012.

To celebrate the achievement, the Anderson family who tipped the cruise line over the magic 500,000 number which took place during Carnival Spirit’s current 11-night New Caledonia cruise, Carnival arranged a special welcome for first time cruisers,.

Briohney and Matt Anderson, both personal trainers from the Sydney suburb of Davidson, had been looking forward to their first cruise with their sons Taylor (8) and Ollie (6) but never dreamed their trip would see them sailing into the history books as Carnival’s 500,000th Australian guests.

[pullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]  “I’ve always wanted to do a cruise and I had heard great things about Carnival – it was the only choice for me really!” Briohney said. “The slides on Carnival Spirit caught my eye, so we didn’t look at anything else.”   [/pullquote]

Briohney said while the family was surprised, the fuss made by the Carnival crew to celebrate the half a million milestone, including a “lovely cake” and balloons, had made them feel special.

The cruise, planned to mark another celebration – Briohney’s 40th birthday – also marks the family’s first family holiday in five years.

Carnival Cruise Line Vice President Australasia Jennifer Vandekreeke said reaching the landmark less than four years after the cruise line’s local debut was testament to the line’s growing popularity among Australian cruisers.

[pullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] “Carnival’s free-spirited, family friendly fun is a fantastic match with Australians’ outgoing and relaxed nature so our local ships consistently receive some of the top passenger ratings in the fleet.   [/pullquote]

[pullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]We’re thrilled that thanks to the support of our repeat guests and new cruisers like the Andersons, we’re now on our way to welcoming a million guests onboard,” Ms Vandekreeke said.[/pullquote]

Grab your mates, pack your luggage and leave on a 10 night cruise extravaganza through the Pacific Islands.

Anticipated to be the world’s largest and brave broadcasts at sea, Carnival Cruise Line is hosting high-spirited radio presenters Hamish and Andy and a “ship load” of their radio listener onboard Carnival Spirit for an first-time five-day live show which will be heard across Australia via satellite from the heart of the South Pacific.

Hailed as “The People’s Cruise” with Hamish & Andy, the duo join by 110 listeners as they present their drive program across the Hit Network onboard the 2,680-guest cruise ship as it sails from Sydney to Vanuatu next month.

While comedy duo are known for most well known for their popular drive-time radio show,The Hamish & Andy Show (and its various follow-ups), and for their shows on television as reporters on Rove and their Nine Network series Hamish & Andy’s Gap Year.

Hamish and Andy are venturing into uncharted waters with the “The People’s Cruise”. The live shows on Carnival Spirit will comprise one from Sydney Harbour, three days at sea and one more anchored off Vanuatu’s uninhabited Mystery Island.

[pullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] Carnival Cruise Line Vice President Australia Jennifer Vandekreeke said: “Carnival shares the same fun ethos as Hamish and Andy. We’re all about fun, free-spirited, holidays for social, outgoing holidaymakers – people like Hamish and Andy and their listeners, who don’t take themselves too seriously and are always up for a laugh and some fun,”   [/pullquote]

To take the show to sea has required laborious testing of satellite capabilities over the region and takes advantage of a recent upgrade of Carnival’s onboard internet access to allow the live broadcast to go to air from remote destinations.

Planning hasn’t been easy, but after laborious testing of satellite capabilities over the region and the recent update of Carnival’s onboard internet access lets the live broadcast to go to air from isolated destinations

[pullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] “We’ve never attempted anything as ambitious as this live broadcast and can’t wait to see what fun we’ll get up to with the lads. We’re expecting Green Thunder to get a good work out for a start.” Says Vandekreeke   [/pullquote]

In a Hit Network first the 110 lucky winners will be chosen from across the country with breakfast show listeners in each city able to secure spots on the “The People’s Cruise”.

[pullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] Hamish and Andy said they were most looking forward to Carnival Spirit’s dive-in cinema, mini golf, Green Thunder waterslide, the Punchline Comedy Club and free 24-hour pizza and ice cream: “Everyone thinks we’ve decided to broadcast from a cruise ship with 110 listeners just so we can drink and relax by one of four pools onboard the ship each day. They are wrong… ‘cause there are only three pools.”   [/pullquote]
