New Cruise Terminal in Brisbane Welcomed By Carnival Australia

Posted: February 18, 2023

The decision to allow further examination of a new dedicated cruise terminal for Brisbane was today welcomed by Carnival Australia.

Carnival Australia Executive Chairman Ann Sherry said Brisbane was one of Australia’s main cruise hubs.

[pullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]”Today’s announcement means we are moving one step closer to a solution that meets the long-term needs of the industry for a modern terminal that can accommodate large ships in Brisbane,” Ms Sherry said.[/pullquote]

[pullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] “Some of the world’s most prestigious ships - such as Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth which visits Brisbane later this month - currently have to berth at a grain terminal. Brisbane is a wonderful city that deserves a cruise facility that can cater for the growing number of larger vessels in the region.”   [/pullquote]

Subject to the mandatory ecological and technical investigations, Ms Sherry said Luggage Point was a suitable location for a facility.

[pullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]”Luggage Point is close to the mouth of the Brisbane River and its location means it can accommodate larger cruise ships, which currently can’t get down the river. It is also a gateway for South East Queensland and regional Queensland,” she said.[/pullquote]

Ms Sherry said Pacific Pearl’s Trans-Tasman cruise to the Downer NRL Auckland Nines was a great example of  P&O creating unique itineraries to attract new audiences to New Zealand shores and benefit the nation’s economy.

The Sydney to Auckland voyage to the Nines will increase the number of international visitors attending the highly anticipated Rugby League event.  The ship’s guests include almost 1000 Australians, with scores signing up for a special cruise package which included four nights in Auckland and access to the Nines.

The Sydney to Auckland cruise will increase the amount of global visitors go to the highly anticipated Rugby League event.

Ms Sherry said Pacific Pearl’s  wide program of itineraries visiting 11 different New Zealand ports  would also offer holidaymakers greater opportunities to explore their own backyard this year and generate an even bigger economic return to the country.

The icing on the cake is a exceptional 10-night circumnavigation of New Zealand sailing at Napier, Wellington, Christchurch (Akaroa), and Picton.  Guests will be mesmerised with a scenic cruise through Fiordland’s awe-inspiring backdrops as well as the cruise line’s maiden call to Stewart Island.

The social media launch will also see the naming posted simultaneously on the godmothers’ Facebook and Instagram accounts and shared by P&O Cruises across its platforms.

Ann Sherry, CEO for Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises, said the cruise line was thrilled that two famous Australians had agreed to name the cruise line’s latest ships.

The day will begin with the cruise line’s five-ship fleet creating a V formation off the Heads of Sydney Harbour early in the morning, as they meet for the first time.

The ships will then enter the Harbour single file, with Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden following their three big sisters. As they reach the centre of the Harbour around 8.30am, Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden will sail either side of Fort Denison, where their godmothers will name them and Champagne bottles will be smashed on their bows.

The five ships will then berth in the Harbour, with 25 artists performing live concerts onboard for guests in the afternoon – including Jessica Mauboy on Pacific Aria. The ships will sail from Sydney in the evening following a spectacular fireworks display for Sydneysiders at 8.45pm.

Jessica Mauboy is an award-winning singer who grew up in Darwin in Australia’s north and shot to stardom in 2006 after appearing on the television show Australian Idol. Her debut 2008 album “Been Waiting” scored double platinum sales and yielded seven ARIA Award nominations. She has since won two ARIAs and has been nominated again for this year’s ARIA awards.

Kate Ritchie is one of Australia’s best loved actresses, having spent 20 years as a lead on Home and Away, a role which earned her two Gold and three Silver Logies. Kate currently co-hosts the ACRA winning Nova’s Kate, Tim & Marty national drive show alongside Tim Blackwell and Marty Sheargold. Previously she co-hosted the extremely popular breakfast radio show on Nova 969 with Merrick and Rosso throughout 2008 and 2009 and appeared on Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities. Two Australian charities will also be the beneficiaries of the event with P&O Cruises making a financial contribution to charities nominated by the Godmothers.

Jessica Mauboy has chosen the Indigenous Literacy Foundation as her charity for the event while Kate Ritchie is yet to announce her charity.

Regarded as game changers for the Australian cruise industry, Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden will feature a fresh, contemporary design and a host of special features from multiple restaurants and a lush private dining room to a resort-style swimming pool deck, with sheer curtains and private cabanas.
