Maintaining Special Dietary Needs While Cruising

Posted: January 20, 2023

Let’s face it, it’s not very often you see the words “cruise” and “diet” mentioned in the same breath.  Cruise Lines are happy to accommodate many different kinds of dietary needs to enhance your cruise vacation.

Cruise food is known for its delicious delights that you wouldn’t eat in your everyday life.

While healthy eating and cruise food may seem like perfect strangers, the cruise lines have made these two perceptions into a workable culinary marriage made in food heaven.

Pasts Conceptions

Once upon a time, the only veggie items obtainable on a cruise were salads and pastas. Meals open a challenge for passengers on medically, or healthy lifestyle diets. As time went by, passengers expressed their concerns, the cruise lines took note. cruise lines make an effort to accommodate all passenger dietary needs and strive to provide delicious and suitable choices on request.

What Cruise Are Doing

Suffice it to say, cruising on today’s ships offers you more than enough options to take part in the things you’d like to do.  Cruise lines now accommodate almost every passengers dietary requirements from vegetarian, vegan, low/no fat, low/no salt, lactose free, dairy free, gluten free, or wheat-free (celiac), diabetic, and also for allergy suffers.

Even though some diets can just be accommodated by the all encompassing menu choices onboard — for instance, vegetarian options are present in almost all dining venues.  All that is required from you is giving the cruise like ample notice of your dietary requirements, and alert the ship’s dining staff when you embark.

Today’s modern cruise ships are floating hotels. And like today’s classy, large hotels, they have a professionally run food and beverage team. Dining rooms are run by exceptionally qualified skilled chefs, who stringently cope with a large team, all working to make certain the well-being and satisfaction of all meals prepared for guests.

Reality is, no they don’t always tick all the boxes, but if you’re happy dining at the restaurant of a good hotel, you can without a doubt feel at ease dining on a cruise ship.

With these guidelines you might be surprised just how well you can eat onboard.

Inform The Cruise Line

Be explicit when advising the cruise line of your dietary requirements

At the time of booking your cruise, inform the travel agent or cruise line of your prerequisites. Be explicit. Such as, if you are lactose intolerant and have a preference to rice, almond milk, or even soy milk, let the cruise line know.

Meet With The Maître d’

Speak with the hotel manager or the maître d' and confirm they have all your details

On the day you embark your cruise, take with you a detailed printout, and speak with the hotel manager or the maître d’ and confirm they have all your details and that they’ll be handed to managers in all the restaurants.

If you are travelling with children with special dietary requirements, make a point to speak with the supervisor in the kids club.

Also, take note of special signs on menus which indicate dishes you may need to avoid ordering.

Get to Know Your Waiters

If the service exceeds all your expectations, book the same table again each night

If you are assigned a table on the first night, and you find that the service exceeds all your expectations, book the same table again each night. Ask your waiter to show you the following day’s menu to deliberate choices. Remember, if you enjoyed a particular mean… you can order it again.

We All Know What Happens When We Assume

Do not assume everyone onboard automatically knows your requirements

Cruise Ships hold anywhere from a few hundred to thousands of passengers, so it’s good to eat a piece of humble pie, and do not assume everyone onboard automatically knows your requirements. Dot your I’s and cross your T’s, so be vigilant.

Do not assume that a chef at the buffet prepared your dish in the approved manner for you once, they will remember the next time. Jog their memory each time; without thinking they may instinctively add an ingredient that does not comply with your everyday diet.

Dietary needs shouldn’t put a dampener on your cruise. Cruise lines can accommodate countless different dietary requirements, all it takes is a little preparation in advance and a bit of attentiveness for the duration of the cruise to uphold the equivalent dietary needs necessary as on land.
